The Board of Trustees acts in the civil society in order to effectively present the interests of the organisation to the public. The members of the Board of Trustees have a right to nominate programme contributions which are worthy of prizes in the European media prize.

Chairwoman Monika Piel

Monika Piel, born in 1951 in the north-western German town of Bensberg. Director-General of Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR). Chairwoman of the CIVIS Board of Trustees. Masters degree in Business Administration from Cologne's College of Economics in 1976 before continuing her studies at the University of Cologne, majoring in law and oriental studies. 1977 assistant to Werner Höfer, host of "Internationaler Frühschoppen". In 1979, she began her career as radio reporter, editor and host of current affairs programming on WDR 2. Between 1982 and 1984, Reporting as a freelance correspondent from Portugal for a number of media, including WDR. From 1989 to 1993, WDR's business and economics correspondent, reporting from the West German capital, Bonn. For two years beginning in 1993, Head of WDR Radio's Business, Agricultural, Environment and Traffic Department and Deputy Managing Editor in 1994. Programme Director of WDR 2 in January 1996, before holding the post of Managing Editor of WDR Radio from 1997 to 1998. Late in 1997, Director of WDR Radio. Chair of the ARD Radio Commission from 2001 to 2002. Monika Piel hosted the following WDR radio programmes: "Morgenmagazin", "Mittagsmagazin", "Zwischen Rhein und Weser", "Bericht von Heute", "Funkhaus Wallrafplatz". From 2001 to 2007, she was one of the regular hosts of "ARD-Presseclub", as well as "Internationaler Frühschoppen"on PHOENIX. Since April 2007 Director General of WDR. Boris Bergant, born 1948 in Maribor, Slovenia. Adviser to the Director-General for International Relations and Programming Cooperation at RTV Slovenia (Radio TV Slovenia). Journalist. Editor in the foreign affairs department, Editor-in-chief of news and current affairs at Radio-RTV Slovenia. 1986–1990 Chairman of the Slovenian Association of Journalists. 1982–1992 President of the International Association of Public Television in Europe (Circom Regional). 1990–1992 and since 1996 member of the Administrative Council of the EBU. 1993 Deputy Chairman of the EBU-Television Committee. 1998-2008 Vice-President of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Since 2006 Advisor to the Director-General for International Relations and Programming Cooperation, RTV Slovenia. Winner of several media prizes. Numerous publications in the field of foreign affairs and the media.

Erik Bettermann, born in 1944 in the Lindenthal district of Leipzig. Director-General of Deutsche Welle (DW). Studied philosophy, education and social paedagogics in Cologne and Bonn. Freelancer for Cologne daily newspapers and a Protestant church newspaper. After activities in the international youth exchange, as of 1982 department head at the Federal Ministry of Youth, Family and Health, subsequently head of the office of the Vice-president in the German Bundestag. 1985-1989 head of department in the SPD party executive, 1989-1991 deputy federal executive director. From 1992 to 2001 member of the City Council of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, 1995 to 2001 as a member of the Senate, representative for Federal Affairs, Europe and Economic Cooperation. Since October 2001 Director-General of Deutsche Welle.

Since 1990 member of parliament, member of the Federal Executive Board of the CDU, Deputy State Chairwoman of the CDU Rhineland Palatinate. Since 1987 also producer of the Nobel Prize winner series "Die stillen Stars", "Nase vorn", "Aber Hallo – Die Frank Elstner Show" and the quiz show "Jeopardy". Dr. Reinhart Freudenberg, born in 1932. Member of the Freudenberg Foundation. Attended school and studied law in Geneva. Scientific work and lawyer in Mannheim. In 1961 joined the Freudenberg group of companies founded by his great-grandfather. Up to 1969 manager of the tannery, 1972 personally liable partner and a member of the Management Board. 1988 - 1997 Chairman of the Management Board in succession to his brother Hermann Freudenberg. 1997 - June 30, 2005 Chairman of the Board of Partners of Freudenberg & Co KG. 2003-2012 Chairman of the board of trustees of the Freudenberg Foundation. Since 2004 member of the board of trustees of the CIVIS media foundation.

Michael Hirz, born in 1952 in Neukirchen-Vluyn. Programme Managing Director of the ARD/ZDF Current Affairs and Documentary channel PHOENIX. Studied Languages and Political Science in Cologne and Bonn. 1977 traineeship and subsequently correspondent at the regional daily newspaper Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger. 1981 editor and chief staff writer at the Press Office of Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR). 1986 Deputy Director of the Media and Public Relations at WDR. 1988 senior editor on the weekly ARD TV talkshow "Presseclub". 1991 Moved to the Department of Domestic Affairs, head of various talk shows.
