Conflicts over Mosques in Europe
Policy issues and trends

In many areas, the construction and expansion of mosques and minarets are exercising a sustained and negative impact on the local political climate, whilst in others they have prompted a marked improvement in intercultural relations. Prof. Dr. Stefano Allievi has studied conflicts across seven European states and in 24 cities. His findings: The quality of the local culture and the general level of acceptance of Muslim minorities are key factors. The European "Ethnobarometer" study (Rome) was compiled on behalf of the Network of European Foundations, the Groeben Foundation and Freudenberg Foundation.

Abrahamischer Trialog
und Zivilgesellschaft

The debate over the significance of plural religions for our modern democracies is now in full swing, and specifically the presence of Islam is posing new challenges for Europe. Equally, discussion over the importance and future of traditional moral precepts for Western democracies and their secular system of values has become a source of growing controversy. And it is in the presentation and communication of such social conflicts that the media is vested with a key and responsible role.

European Conditions. Findings of a study on Group-focused Enmity in Europe

How many Europeans hold prejudiced attitudes? What are the major causes? Do European countries differ in the level of prejudices and triggering factors? What can European countries learn from each other for intervention and prevention? The Project on "Group-focused Enmity in Europe" aims to measure the level of prejudice towards several target groups, to analyse the most relevant causes of prejudice, to find out more about similarities and differences between European countries, to disseminate findings to policy makers and field workers to support evidence-based action.

Attitudes towards the Islam and Muslims in Europe

This report presents results on attitudes of Europeans towards the Islam and Muslims. The results are based on data of the representative survey on Group-Focused Enmity in Europe. This survey was conducted from October until December 2008. In each of eight countries 1.000 representatively selected citizens were interviewed by telephone. Respondents were 16 years or older. Germany, Britain, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, Poland and Hungary participated in the study. Interviews focused on prejudices towards several different target groups, on attitudes towards democracy and Europe and on individual fears, worries and orientations.

Migrants and Media
New documentation

CIVIS is offering a new clear documentation of the most important studies about the media presentation, media use and reception of migrants and ethnic minorities, for use free-of-charge. The overview takes a topical and systematizing look back at the theme of migrants and the media. The overview documents the status of European research between 2003 to 2009. The synopsis by Prof. Dr. Georg Ruhrmann, holder of the chair of Media Communication and the Effects of Media at the University of Jena, was prepared at the suggestion of CIVIS - with the collaboration of Franka Schulz and Stefanie Eckhardt.

Programme for all!
The immigration society in the media

Demographic change, mobility and migration are leaving their mark on the reality of life for the citizens of Germany. In Cologne or Berlin, almost half the children of pre-school age come today from immigrant families. Minorities are being transformed into majorities - above all, in the urban conurbations. Do our media adequately reflect this profound change? The CIVIS Media Foundation, Westdeutscher Rundfunk and the Deutsche Welle organized a programme conference for radio and television on September 11, 2008 at the Deutsche Welle in Bonn. On the basis of actual programme examples, programme-makers and producers discussed the presentation and development of the European immigration society in the media.
