Prof. Markus Schächter, born in 1949 in Hauenstein/Rhineland-Palatinate. Director-General of Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF). Since 2004 Professor at the College of Music and Theatre in Hamburg. Studied history, politcal science, journalism and religious studies at the Universities of Munich, Lyon, Paris and Mainz. 1973-1976 freelance work for radio and television in the Rhineland Palatinate regional studio of Südwestfunk. 1974-1977 freelance in the central editorial department Culture of Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen in Mainz and the German Press Agency (dpa) in Paris. 1976-1977 editor for cultural policy in the Rhineland-Palatinate regional studio of Südwestfunk. 1977 Head of the Public Relations department in the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Culture in Mainz. 1981-1983 Department head for Planning Questions relating to the Cable and Satellite Programme in the ZDF. 1983-1984 Personal assistant of the ZDF Programme Director. 1984-1985 Head of the ZDF Culture and Society editorial department. 1985-1992 Head of the ZDF Children and Youth editorial department. 1992 Head of the ZDF Planning editorial department (Programme). 1993-1998 Head of the ZDF Programme Planning central department. 1998-2002 Programme Director of ZDF. Since March 2002 Director-General of the ZDF.
