Monika Piel

Monika Piel, born in 1951 in the north-western German town of Bensberg. Director-General of Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR). Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees of the CIVIS Media Foundation. She was awarded a masters degree in Business Administration from Cologne's College of Economics in 1976 before continuing her studies at the University of Cologne, majoring in law and oriental studies. While still attending university, she began working at WDR for the highly-respected weekly journalistic talk-show "Internationaler Frühschoppen". The next year, she was named assistant to the programme's host, Werner Höfer. In 1979, she began her career as radio reporter, editor and host of current affairs programming on WDR 2. Between 1982 and 1984, Monika Piel reported as a freelance correspondent from Portugal for a number of media, including WDR. Later, she joined WDR as a political reporter and editor. From 1989 to 1993, she was WDR's business and economics correspondent, reporting from the West German capital, Bonn. For two years beginning in 1993, she headed WDR Radio's Business, Agricultural, Environment and Traffic Department and was named Deputy Managing Editor in 1994. Monika Piel became Programme Director of WDR 2 in January 1996, before holding the post of Managing Editor of WDR Radio from 1997 to 1998. Late in 1997, she was promoted to Director of WDR Radio. Monika Piel chaired the ARD Radio Commission from 2001 to 2002. Monika Piel hosted the following WDR radio programmes: "Morgenmagazin", "Mittagsmagazin", "Zwischen Rhein und Weser", "Bericht von Heute", "Funkhaus Wallrafplatz". From 2001 to 2007, she was one of the regular hosts of "ARD-Presseclub" on the nationally televised First Programme, as well as "Internationaler Frühschoppen" on the nation-wide current affairs and documentary television channel PHOENIX. On 20th of November 2006 she was elected Director General of WDR, assuming the post on 1st April 2007. Since April 2008 Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees of the CIVIS Media Foundation.
