European Parliament
The President of the European Parliament is the patron of the European CIVIS Media Prize. 736 members of parliament from the 27 EU member states sit in the European Parliament. In June 1979, the European Parliament was elected for the first time in general and direct elections. Since then the citizens of Europe go to the polls regularly every 5 years, most recently in June 2009, in order to elect a joint parliament. Legitimized by the general and direct elections, in the succeeding years as a result of a whole series of treaties, the European Parliament has been invested with increasing powers and growing influence on European politics. In particular, the Maastricht and Amsterdam Treaties have transformed the European Parliament step-by-step from an advisory body into a parliament with legislative and control powers, which handles responsibilities on a European level which are roughly similar to those of the national parliaments of the member states.
