Deutsche Welle
Deutsche Welle is Germany's international broadcaster. According to its statutory mission, Deutsche Welle will "promote understanding of Germany as an independent nation with its roots in European culture and as a liberal, democratic, constitutional state based on the rule of law." It is also meant to "provide a forum in Europe and on other continents to German and other points of view on important issues, with the aim of fostering understanding and exchange between cultures and people." In addition, it will contribute to promoting the German language. Director-General of Deutsche Welle is Eric Bettermann. The focus of the journalistic services of DW is on news and information. DW-TV, 24 hours alternately in German and Englisch and in addition time slots with an Arabic and Spanish programme; DW-RADIO in 30 languages - from Amharic to Urdu; the multimedia internet portal DW-WORLD.DE in just as much languages. It also runs the DW-AKADEMIE, where radio professionals from developing and transition countries receive further training. Through its media Deutsche Welle safeguards the presence of German values in a globalised world. DW went on the air on May 3, 1953. It is a public service broadcaster and member of the Association of the Public Broadcasting Corporations in the Federal Republic of Germany (ARD). About 1.450 employees in Bonn and Berlin are fulfilling the programme mission. Deutsche Welle is allocated funds of the German Federal Government.
