Authors: Ilona Stämpfli, Marek Beles
Editing: Ilona Stämpfli, Marek Beles (SRF)
Content: Together with his family, Ayham is forced to flee from Syria to escape the war. He does not really want to leave his home and his friends. But the danger is too great. They are travelling for five months. In Switzerland a new life begins for the 11-year-old. The first few months are tough, but at school, Ayham makes friends with classmates who like to play football. The coach discovers his talent and makes it possible for him to have a trial with the Grasshopper Club in Zurich. The club takes him into its junior team for one year. Integration is a development from two sides - careful camera, impressive cutting and dramaturgy.
The Feature: Right up to the last breath. Ultras and the radicalisation of the fan culture in football
Authors: Agnese Franceschini, Tom Mustroph
Direction: Thomas Wolfertz
Editing: Leslie Rosin (WDR), Katrin Moll (Deutschlandradio)
Content: In May 2014, for the first time an ultra fan of AS Roma shoots at a fan of SSC Naples, who then died. In Germany the fan groups are becoming increasingly violent. In and around the stadium terraces there is an explosive mixture of passion, love of violence and right-wing ideology. In 2015, fighting hooligans were classified by the Federal Court as a criminal organization. The fan scene is colourful, partly right-wing and it is on the move. The feature investigates the causes of the spiralling violence and the future of the fan culture. A Europe-wide right-wing network - highly informative, multi-facetted, of high radiophonic quality.
Content: Football recognizes neither linguistic nor cultural boundaries, it brings people together. The integration of people with a refugee and immigration background is a challenge for the whole of society. It only succeeds via personal encounters and through the integration into social structures. Football provides an ideal opportunity to connect with civil society. Football is a motor for integration. The interactive video website presents numerous different integration experiences in short videos. Highly professional – unusual in both content and form.
Hamburg Media School/BR
Direction: Matthias Koßmehl
Examination board: Prof. Richard Reitinger
Editing: Claudia Gladziejewski (BR)
Content: Austin Abasi - the professional footballer from Ghana is sold against his will to a Bavarian provincial club. On arrival at the TSV Gretzing, he is forced to realize that even in First World countries there is fifth-grade football. Instead of the hoped-for Champions League with FC Bayern, Austin is now involved in a battle against relegation into the fifth division - with a coach who never wanted him. Gradually, players and coaches discover things they have in common. They range from Ghana to Gretzing. Topical, humorous, powerful images – impressive filming and acting.
The Virgin Mania"
ZDF/ HANFGARN & UFER Filmproduktion/ ARTE
Author: Güner Yasemin Balci
Direction: Güner Yasemin Balci
Producer: Andrea Ufer (Hanfgarn & Ufer Filmproduktion)
Editing: Burkhard Althoff (ZDF), Kathrin Brinkmann (ZDF / ARTE)
Content: Sexual freedom can still be life-threatening for young Muslims. The commandment of virginity, as it is still preached in many mosques, calls for punishment of self-determined sexuality. Much of what is currently being discussed as a problem of Muslim migrants has its origin in the central theme of the entire Muslim world: the demonization of female sexuality. The suppression of women, excessive machismo and readiness to make use of violence by men, forced marriages and violence in the name of honour. One of the major barriers to integration - an important, a special film.
Out of Sight
Authors: Domenico Iannacone, Luca Cambi
Direction: Domenico Iannacone, Luca Cambi
Producer: Valeria Durante (RAI 3)
Editing: Igor Francescato
Content: Lampedusa, longed-for gateway to Europe, border without barbed wire in the middle of the Mediterranean. The dramatic images and reports of one of the biggest ship catastrophes compel us to take a personal view, to look into our innermost core - without ideological preconditions or political influences. The report shows survivors and also some who died. Lampedusa - at the crossroads of distant worlds. Here, people meet together who know nothing about each other, who never came close to each other – until they grasped for the rescuing lifeline. Haunting statements, shocking images - a deeply human, moving film.
The Story – The Brown Network
Authors: Caterina Woj, Andrea Röpke
Direction: Caterina Woj, Andrea Röpke
Editing: Jo Angerer (WDR)
Content: The calls on the streets are becoming increasingly uncontrolled. Driven by hate against Angela Merkel, refugees, democracy and the rule of law. A new angry movement. Mostly right-wing and frequently racist. Strategists, intellectual thinkers, and a whole new generation of right-wing populists are trying to control this movement: neo-Nazis in backrooms with connections in business circles. With worldwide connections, they pursue a common goal: the establishment of an extra-parliamentary, anti-democratic movement. Outstanding in terms of content and form - the danger of increasingly extreme right-wing networking is growing.
The Other One – A Family Story
Independent Artists Filmproduktion Aladag/ ZDF
Author: Feo Aladag
Direction: Feo Aladag
Producer: Feo Aladag
Editing: Daniel Blum (ZDF)
ontent: The film tells the moving story of the under-aged refugee Nama from Mali. The boy is taken by the lonesome 75-year-old Willi to the house of his son Stefan. Willi is attempting, in his remaining lifetime, to give back what he has learned as a child: willingness to help from people who have taken him in following his flight. A question of guilt between Willi and his son prevents a peaceful coexistence. But Nama brings new life into the relationship which has become frozen as a result of speechlessness. Also shows the other side of the welcoming culture - very realistic, powerful images, impressive.
The Hodja and Ms. Piepenkötter
Author: Gernot Gricksch based on the novel of the same name by Birand Bingül
Direction: Buket Alakus
Producers: Viola Jäger, Harald Kügler (Olga Film)
Editing: Sophie Seitz (WDR)
Content: Does the construction of a mosque inevitably threaten to cause Islamisation of the West? For quite a number of people, that would appear to be the case. The current Lady Mayoress of Lautringen, Ursel Piepenkötter, is about to enter the next Mayoral election on behalf of her party. But the town's Turkish community at last wants to build a new mosque. What delights their religious leader, the new Hodja, creates a major party-political problem for Piepenkötter. The duel between the two cunning, stubborn firebrands takes its course.A clash of cultures in the German provinces - humorous, satirical, with a great love of the absurd.

France Télévisions/ Scarlett Production/ TV 5 Monde/ RTS/ A Plus Image 6
Authors: Françoise Charpiat, Aude Marcle
Direction: Xavier Durringer
Producer: Joëy Faré (Scarlett Production)
Editing: Sophie Exbrayat (France 2)
Content: Chama is the pride of her family. The 17-year-old is accepted by the Science-Po, a prestigious Paris college of politics. Chama has a bright future ahead of her. What nobody notices is the Islamic radicalization of the young woman. She secretly wants to join her friend Louis, who she has married via Skype and who is taking part in the Jihad in Syria. Her mother Inés recognizes the imminent danger in the nick of time and locks herself in with her daughter. A bitter confrontation begins. Highly emotional, exciting, intense – it demonstrates the disorientation of young people. Great filming and wonderful acting.
ODMEVI: Flüchtlingsdrama in Belgrad
Author: Boštjan Anžin (RTV SLO)
Direction: Boštjan Anžin, Janja Lakner Anžin
Editing: Jadranka Rebernik (RTV SLO)
Content: Belgrade - one of the major epicentres of the European refugee crisis. Thousands of Afghans and Pakistanis (w/m) find protection in the Serbian capital. They do not want to enter any official asylum shelters out of fear that they could promptly be deported to one of the reception centres in the south. They prefer to live under miserable conditions in deserted halls behind the main railway station in the centre of Belgrade, unnoticed by locals and tourists. Their suffering continues - with temperatures below -25 degrees centigrade. Intense pictures, disturbing insight into a miserable catastrophe - unusually powerful, an important film.
Authors: Arndt Ginzel, Thomas Datt, Alexander Greiner
Editing: Jörg Wildermuth (MDR)
Content: Right-wing groups are exerting increased pressure on left-wing supporters and foreigners in the town of Bautzen in Saxony. In September 2016, the situation escalates: there are violent clashes between young refugees and locals, among them some right-wing extremists, in the town centre of Bautzen. The initiators are several aggressive asylum-seekers, some of whom allow themselves to be provoked by right-wing extremists. For underage refugees, a curfew is temporarily imposed. The right-wing extremists believe themselves to be victorious and threaten with further riots. 100 right-wing followers hunt 20 refugees - a highly political issue, frightening, convincing.
Panorama: Alternative for Politics: Emotions instead of Facts
Authors: Ben Bolz, Johannes Edelhoff
Editing: Volker Steinhoff (NDR)
Content: The rhetoric of the populists makes use of fears, dramatizations and threatening disasters. Emotions rather than facts – with respect to climate change, Islam and the theme of refugees. The people should be mobilized emotionally, facts are not so important for the emotional politics. The AfD politician Alexander Gauland frankly admits that the AfD exaggerates the dangers of refugee crime: "It is not done by asserting false facts, but by focusing on certain facts in the forefront of the argument". The campaigning techniques of populists are understandably visible - unusual, memorable, virtuoso.
Katjas Universum – Integration – We are the old new ones
Author: Katja Garmasch
Editing: Nicole Brinkmann (WDR)
Content: "Katjas Universum" comments on and interprets current events of integration – with a tough but sincere approach: "Where was your so-called welcome culture when we arrived here, the Russians ask themselves perplexed. These refugees are destroying our order, our freedom, our prosperity. We have given up everything to be here. We fought hard for our place - against Turks. It's like suddenly getting a brother, and being afraid that your parents will no longer love you. Now we have to integrate them. We are responsible. Eh, but the Turks too" Cheeky, pithy, self-ironic - outstanding in form and content.
WDR 5 Morgenecho – Living under the IS, Part 6: Together and yet separated – Families in a refugee camp
Author: Anna Osius
Editing: Lars Krupp (WDR)
Content: There are dramatic scenes every day alongside the fences of the refugee camps: families find their relatives once again, many have not seen each other for two-and-a-half-years. For security reasons, they can only greet each other through the fence. Every man and also teenager, who wants to enter the refugee camp is checked with respect to their feelings about the IS and in some case isolated for days. A controversial procedure. The offensive against the IS has triggered a huge flood of refugees. More than 135,000 people have fled in recent months from the violence in Northern Iraq. The reasons for flight are clear - very moving, excellently documented.
Ö1 Morgenjournal: Balkans closed, Asylum-seekers between hope and despair. Part: Serbia.
Author: Bernt Koschuh
Direction: Wilhelm Wimmer
Editing: Barbara Weinzierl, Christian Williwald (ORF)
Content: March 2016. The Balkan route to Northern Europe is closed. Transport by train and bus is officially suspended, the border crossings are closed for refugees. Thousands of stranded asylum-seekers cannot believe it: on reaching the halfway mark, the general conditions for them have changed. They had travel documents. Now they hope for a miracle. The conditions for them are getting increasingly difficult: continuous rain, infectious diseases are spreading. There is a lack of medecines, clothing and shoes.Authentic, very moving - an outstanding report, shows the complete feeling of helplessness.
SRF 2 Kultur: Kontext: Dark-skinned and under suspicion
Reports and studio discussion
Authors: Christoph B. Keller, Jan Tussing
Editing: Christoph B. Keller (SRF)
Presentation: Bernhard Senn
Content: Dark-skinned people are often subjected to controls in Switzerland because of the colour of their skin. A check because of specific physical or ethnic characteristics is illegal. A group of scientists sees "Racial Profiling" as a deep-seated form of social racism. One video attracted attention: a football star from FC Zürich was confused with a pickpocket, thrown to the ground by several policemen, tied up and taken away. Persons involved organize themselves and the police take action - how and why is explained by the programme in reports and interviews. Highly topical – multi-perspective, excellent production.
MDR KULTUR – Das Radio: Beyond the Chestnuts
Author: Marina Frenk
Direction: Stefan Kanis
Editing: Stefan Kanis (MDR)
Content: "Do you know what a DDON is? A DDON is a 'Definitive Dummy of no Nationality'. I am one". Marina Frenk was born in a Russian-Jewish family, came to Germany together with her parents in 1993, to be more precise: to Dortmund-Nordstadt. In the heart of the migrant jungle of the Ruhr region, as she says, when she talks - with a glance at the fate of today's refugees - about her own "integration". About cultural transformation and an identity mess, of what has been lost: a language, an origin. New Germans and Old Germans. Very thoughtful, very funny, very political - a brilliant radio drama.
Bayern 2: Zündfunk Generator: Alehouse politics – from democracy and discussions to polemics and passwords
Author: Birgit Frank
Direction: Rainer Schaller
Editing: Caroline von Lowtzow (BR)
Content: Between the public house and Facebook - simple solutions to complex problems. What does "alehouse politics" really mean? When there is talk of alehouse politics, then it is usually a matter of unqualified, unsupervised talk about politics: coarse statements based largely on gut feelings. The feature looks into the question of how current policy is made and how it is perceived. Does the Internet spread more and more bar room slogans? Sitting at the Bavarian regulars' table, the CSU politician Peter Gauweiler.Shows the new regulars' table - breaks through the clichés, highly political, of high radiophonic quality.
hr2-kultur DER TAG: Limits of Enlightenment – Right-wing Violence and the Legal System
Authors: Angela Fitsch, Dr. Ulrich Sonnenschein, Claudia Sautter, Karen Fuhrmann
Direction: Markus Hürtgen
Editing: Angela Fitsch, Dr. Ulrich Sonnenschein, Claudia Sautter
Presentation: Karen Fuhrmann (hr)
Content: Munich, Higher Regional Court: 333rd day of proceedings in the NSU trial. It is the most important and, above all, the longest process involving right-wing terror, which there has ever been in Germany. It offers an insight into the depths of the right-wing scene, as well as the failure of the guardians of the constitution. Since May 2013 hundreds of witnesses have been heard, countless legal skirmishes and a hearing of evidence which should really have already finished. However, it is only the tip of right-wing violence that is revealed by this process. Unique political radio feature - comprehensive, profound, topical and highly professional.

Conception: Hannah Kappes, Georg Tschurtschenthaler, Tanja Schmoller, Jens-Uwe Grau
Content:"#uploading holocaust" is a web project about the digital memory culture of the Holocaust. Against anti-Semitism and racism, and in favour of an open discussion of the theme in the social media. How does remembrance go today? Dancing in Auschwitz? Taking selfies on graves? Completely tasteless or absolutely OK? A combination of video material and interactive questionnaire. The starting point are original YouTube videos from Jewish students, who every year make a class trip in Poland on the trail of their ancestors who were killed by the Nazi regime. Authentic, moving, a high-profile theme - unusually presented.

Authorized representative: Michael Karhausen
Conception: Rayna Breuer, Sime Nedevski
Content: "Multimedia-Balkanroute" is a multimedia special, a journey on the borders of the Balkans. The most important way to Western Europe is completely sealed off. Hundreds of kilometres of barbed wire and walls have been built since last year. Thousands of people have stopped on their way. Who are they, what have they been through? A search for evidence along several Border crossing points. Conversations with refugees in overcrowded accommodation, who hardly have any hope of reaching their destinations. A web project with young journalists in the West Balkans. Up-to-date, powerful images, well-documented - a highly informative website.
No room for the Right-Wing: www.kein-raum-fuer-rechts.de
Interactive multimedia online project
BAFF Filmproduktion, Kubikfoto3
Authorized representative: Ole Leifels
Conception: Sebastian Heidelberger
Content: "No Room for the Right-Wing" provides views of the interior of the room of a young neo-Nazi - with Nazi fan articles: swastika flag, right-wing rock CDs, flags, buttons, books. It is modelled, among other things, on the rooms of dropouts and members of the NSU terror network, which is accused of being responsible for racist murders, attacks and raids. The result is an interactive, multi-medial website, which explains the dangers of the extreme right-wing. Only those who recognize neo-Nazis, can understand their structures and strategies, can do something against them. A playfully subjective approach to highly political content - highly professional, very compelling.
NSU - Right-wing Terror Then and Now: webdoku.nsu-terror.de
BR/ DasErste/ WDR/ SWR
Authorized representative: Thomas Sessner
Conception: Matthias Leitner, Peter Künzel, Thies Marsen, Christiane Miethge, Christoph Wolff
Content: "NSU – Right-wing Terror Then and Now". The problem of the "national socialist underground" was not solved with the Munich process. There continue to be crimes in the name of the NSU - every fifth day, according to the information provided by the BKA. Is German society prepared for it? In the interactive web documentation the user identifies as a researcher: How did right networks help the NSU find weapons and accommodation? What mistakes have the investigators made in the persecution of the NSU? Is this still possible today? Extensive production at the highest technical-formal level - excellent journalism.
Content: "Ramo: Should I go back to Syria?" Ramo is an artist and a Syrian refugee. Repeatedly he hears in Germany: why did you flee and did not fight for your country Syria? There are constant discussions about refugees: why have so many young Syrian men fled to Germany? In the web video, the refugee Ramo himself speaks. He explains in two and a half minutes why - in German and Arabic - and thus summarizes the complex political situation in Syria. Self-ironic, humorous, powerful images - very impressive and informative.
Brown Family – Part 5: Costume Day
Quantum/ZDF, Polyphon Berlin
Authorized representative: Lucia Haslauer, Lucas Schmidt
Conception: Manuel Meimberg, Maurice Hübner, Uwe Urbas
Content: "Brown Family” – Part 5: Costume Day”. A politically incorrect mini-comedy series on YouTube cheekily and satirically handles the topic of right-wing extremism. Two neo-Nazis in their Nazi appartment between overflowing ashtrays, beer bottles and pizza cartons, suddenly have to look after the six-year-old black daughter of one of them. Lara's disarming ingenuousness shows just how thin and brittle the right-wing ideologies of the two are. When it is Costume Day in Lara's school, she looks for a very special model for her fancy dress. Humorous, subtle, plays with clichés – splendid.

Authorized representative: Trini Götze
Conception: Chiara Grabmayr, Moritz Tessendorf, Philipp Trauer, Veronika Neuber
Content: "Moonjourney". A father and his small six-year-old daughter. They must flee to escape the war. To protect them, the father allows his child to believe that they will travel together to the Moon. The destination - the moon – appears to move a little closer every night. For the little girl the oil transporter becomes a rocket, the desert to planetary stones, and the Mediterranean to the cosmos, which they ultimately weightlessly cross to arrive on the Moon. In the end, the illusion threatens to shatter. Beautiful, deeply sad, very moving - emotional, but without chumming up.
