The town of Ensisheim in southern Alsace: With the aid of the police, the mayor burns down a Roma camp which has earned him the eternal gratitude of the townsfolk. Despite the mayor’s court conviction, the deeply conservative, nationalistic local citizens celebrate his forced eviction of the 80 Romas as an heroic deed. For the Alsace is a stronghold of the extreme right in France, where latent xenophobia is deeply entrenched in many rural areas.
