Monitor – Armed force against maritime search and rescue. Lawless zone in the Mediterranean

Nomination 2020

Writer:Lara Straatmann, Nikolaus Steiner
Editorial:Georg Restle, Golineh Atai
Magazine show, Westdeutscher Rundfunk / ARD

Largely unnoticed by the public, the Mediterranean is becoming a lawless zone for Libyan militia, who are often extremely aggressive towards refugees and maritime search and rescue organisations. The so-called Libyan coastguard is even operating in European rescue zones, forcing asylum-seekers back to where they are threatened with torture and slavery. International law experts are critical of the EU for violating its own human right obligations by supporting the militia.

Excerpt from the jury’s statement
The ‘Armed force against maritime search and rescue’ documentary is a formidable testimony of the violent defence of Fortress Europe. It draws attention to what most people do not want to see and to which almost every government in the EU is turning a blind eye. A fantastic piece of journalism.
