No sooner does the Leipzig footballer Adebowale Ogungbure take possession of the ball, when a chorus of monkey chants erupts from the terraces. Chemnitz fans march through Hamburg with their arms raised in the Hitler salute. Racism and anti-Semitism are part of everyday life in Germany’s football stadiums. With the clubs lacking the funds to supervise fans and install video surveillance cameras, the stadium is now becoming a platform for xenophobic slogans and insults.
