Over 200,000 people fled in 2014 across the Mediterranean, more than 3,000 of them died. In the pockets of many refugees is a piece of paper with a Swiss mobile number: “Your life depends upon this number”, says one of the refugees. The number belongs to the Eritrean Mussie Zerai. As a priest he serves the Eritrean Catholics in Switzerland. He knows their stories. He has saved the lives of many of them during their escape. From Switzerland, Mussie Zerai alerts the Italian rescue workers and helps those who have managed to pass various authorities.

Excerpt from the jury’s statement
